Eczema Treatment: How to Prevent Recurrences   by Dee Cohen

It’s important to stay vigilant when you have eczema because it can recur after your skin clears if you let your guard down. There are steps to take to keep your skin from erupting again.

It’s easy to forget the itching and redness when your eczema skin eruptions clear, but it’s necessary to stay on top of this skin condition due to the fact of it’s recurrent nature. We don’t like to think about a health issue when it seems better, but this is necessary for eczema patch issues because diet and external conditions can stimulate the problem once again if we aren’t watchful.
I learned this dearly when I went out in the sun for a few hours after my skin cleared in the late summer. I did a lot of things wrong: I was in the sun too long, I didn’t moisturize my skin and I took hot showers that day.

Even when your skin is clear, if you are prone to an Eczema Rash, take the time to moisturize twice a day. This is critical and it’s good to do this right after showering. Don’t overdry your skin by taking long hot showers, but instead, take shorter showers with warm water. Use a moisturizer that doesn’t contain alcohol. If it’s winter, keep a humidifier on or put little bowls of water around the home to get moisture in the air.

Watch the food you ingest. Try to avoid acidic foods, food dyes and anything you know you’ve had an allergic reaction to in the past. Some people find that a kelp supplement helps them as it neutralizes acid due to it’s alkalinic content.

Supplements of flax seed oil, vitamin E and B complex are good both for the skin and for stress levels. Many find flax oil and vitamin E helpful when you have an active phase of Eczema And are dealing with itching or red inflamed skin patches. The lauric acid in coconut oil is soothing to many as well so during an outbreak try this on your rash areas. Always check ingredients as eczema sufferers have allergies often and you need to see the additives and what is in the product. Many manufacturers add fillers and this can cause more problems.

Keep your stress level down using music cds, simple breathing exercises and perspective. Remember, it is not life threatening and each day is unique and won’t be repeated. Itching is increased by stress so find ways to stay centered that work for you.
